Data that resides in a fixed field within a record or file is called structured data. This includes data contained in relational databases and spreadsheets. Structured data first depends on creating a data model – a model of the types of business data that will be recorded and how they will be stored, processed and accessed.
Structured data is an important part of the overall information assets of an organization, and must be analyzed in conjunction with the information available in unstructured data to provide a complete picture of any situation. Structured data, without context, can be difficult to understand. Part of managing structured data is provide the analysis that will put the data in a meaningful context.
